And a post for the "uninitiated" - some Equestrian terminology

It has come to my attention that many of you reading this will not understand or comprehend the significance of the trip we are about to embark on.

Badminton Horse Trials is the most prestigious Three Day Event in the world and one of the oldest. Steeped in tradition, it is a major sporting event on the UK calendar - for those horsey and not! In England, eventing is a major sport and the top riders are all household names. A little different to our scene here in Australia!

Go here to check it out.

The other event of significance in our itinerary, is the Rolex Kentucky 3DE in USA. It is the same standard of competition as Badminton and is the American Three Day Event that everyone wants to win.  See details here.

Being 2011, performances at these events will have a large bearing on which horse and rider combinations are selected to compete for their countries in the Three Day Event at the London Olympics. Although I may be considered somewhat mad to be spectating at both (there's only three days between Badminton ending and Kentucky starting!)...well there's several riders with multiple horses who are entered at BOTH. Obviously, a horse can only be expected to complete once such event in such a short span of time, so lucky riders who have several mounts can defy logistics and ride at both!

So there's some of the horsey stuff aside for now. I do promise to blog on other topics, like attractions in London, Europe and New York City. ;-)
